The arrival of the troops on Schinoussa
I was sitting at Pothiti's taverna in Schinoussa chora having breakfast one morning when Iheard a loud noise, growing into a deafening noise, and was soon covered in a cloud of dust. A helicopter landed in the field next to the taverna and some soldiers landed. The soldiers were known on the island and many people greeted them by their christian names. It was a few days before an election, and the soldiers' arrival had something to do with the election but I never discovered exactly what. Were they there to keep order (that seemed unlikely on remote little Schinoussa); or perhaps to deliver and collect voting papers? Whatever else the soldiers did, they certainly caused some dust to land in my breakfast yogurt and honey!
